The DU LLB exam has a syllabus concentration which is different from other Law entrance exams. It focuses heavily on four major areas – Legal Aptitude, Indian Constitution (Polity with a focus on legal aspects), GK and Current Affairs. Preparation Tips for DU LLB Entrance Exam

  • Do NOT neglect Legal Aptitude and Constitution

    – The DU LLB exam has a strong focus on Legal Aptitude and Indian Polity, especially as it relates to the legal aspects. This is not surprising, and is very much to be expected – after all, it is an entrance exam for admission in one of India’s most premier 3-year LLB schools, which counts numerous Supreme Court and High Court judges as its alumni. This means that you should aim to develop a good understanding of the Indian Constitution, its structure, sections and schedules. Further, you should also have a good overview of the IPC and the CrPC. For most students, this is going to be completely new content. The Polity part might still be familiar for those who prepared for Civil Services or SSC exams, but for others this will require detailed and intense study.

  • GK and Current Affairs

    – Unfortunately, there is no defined syllabus for this area of the paper. Anyone who claims that they will prepare you for 100% of the questions asked in the GK and Current Affairs section is lying! If you are confident of 80-85% of the questions asked in the GK/Current Affairs section, you should consider your preparation excellent. So what should one do? How shall a student prepare for such a mysterious section? The answer is available in careful analysis of past years’ papers. We have done this over the last decade, and have observed a few patterns that I will share with you. These are known to be favourite areas for the examiners and from where questions will definitely be asked. Some important things you should certainly cover are:

  1. Important awards each year – sports, science, literature and arts
  2. Major UN bodies, their functions and their locations
  3. You should have a good overview of Indian geography and history
  4. Physical geography, science and environment
  5. Important happenings in the area of the Indian Constitution or Justice system

For Current Affairs, pick one or two reliable sources and sincerely follow them. This is better and more systematic than trying to cover as many sources as possible.

  • Basic Arithmetic –

Many students feel that their Math is too weak, and they have heard that this is an important part of the DU LLB exam. So they do not have confidence while approaching the paper. In reality, the DU LLB exam has a very small component of Math – perhaps 5 to 7 questions out of a total of 175. These are usually simple questions based on Class X level concepts. In fact, if Maths is your bugbear then you can even safely consider skipping preparation for that section altogether. There are probably many other areas where the returns for your efforts will be much higher.

Books for Preparation –

There are a number of books commonly available across bookstores that cover preparation for the DU LLB entrance. However, I would advise a little bit of caution in choosing to prepare exclusively from these books. In our experience, most of the books available are not of good quality and contain several errors, especially in the all-important Legal Aptitude and GK sections. This is of crucial importance, because you as a student would not know that you are studying a wrong concept and would use the same fundamentals in the exam. And the exam has negative marking, so such errors are strongly penalized. Hence, please exercise your judgment in selecting a book for studying from.

Writing Mock Tests – mocks form an important part of the exam preparation. Look for a good online mock test series, and aim to write at least 6-8 mock tests before the actual exam. Reproduce the exam conditions as much as possible – including the time limit and turning your phone off to avoid distractions! The test series we offer at ExamVictor allows you to do just that.

Hope that these high-level strategies help to guide your preparation for the DU LLB entrance exam 2018. All the best!
